Midwest Collective presents the first release from Sacramento, CA-based artist, producer, and illustrator Styles Munson. Written and produced in the span of two years following recent work with Sacramento collage pop band Pregnant, ‘Holed Up’ offers a collection of four experimental bedroom pop songs that don’t seem to know how to shy away from grand, bold moments. Inversely, in each of the songs there are just as many moments of simple and intimate sounds like that of a nervous guitar, a floating synth line, or a mangled vocal. The songs here are largely formed from the recording and manipulating of Munson’s own playing of guitar, bass, violin, with other elements that have gone untouched. Accompanied by his own vocals, the blend of everything together creates a world of its own.
Munson’s lyrics slip out with a dreamlike energy—playful and bright, but not insubstantial. The energy shifts from driven to bouncing, unafraid to meandering for moments of just one lone melody before bursting back into a fullness of sound. ‘Holed Up’ is something new that feels familiar on first listen.
“Choosing how I want to present myself gets weirder the more I think about it, so it’s probably not a good idea to stick to one thing,” says Styles. “Fun in music is just as important as being serious. Pop, to me, is the easiest way to experiment within that broad range, and that’s what this EP is about. Locking yourself away and experimenting and hoping good things come out on the other side, while trying to keep it cohesive and use it as a tool to deal with old feelings that might not have had a place to go otherwise. It’s therapy.”
Buoyant vocals and a varied palette of synths work in perfect tandem to create gorgeous art-pop that's able to address big realities. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 2, 2019
